Yamaha without a chip? Speedchip is working on a new generation of e-bike tuning
The e-bike tuning market is changing rapidly. Just a few years ago, removing the speed limiter almost always meant installing an additional module near the motor. Today, software-based solutions are playing an increasingly important role – without an extra chip remaining in the bike.
Following our Speedchip solutions for Bosch systems, the next direction for our development is Yamaha.
Yamaha Tuning – the next step for Speedchip
We are working on expanding Speedchip technology to select Yamaha drive systems. Our goal is to create a solution that allows for changing the factory speed limit in the simplest way possible, without traditional tuning that requires the permanent installation of an additional module near the motor.
We are analyzing, among other things, the possibility of using technology based on software communication with the bike's system.
Ultimately, the solutions being developed may include such capabilities as:
activation via a Speedchip license,
software communication with the bike's electronics,
no additional chip left near the motor,
the ability to restore factory settings,
a simpler process for activating and deactivating the tuning.
Details will depend on the specific drive generation, display, and communication capabilities of individual Yamaha systems.
Which Yamaha motors are we interested in?
First and foremost, we are looking at the most popular drive generations found in trekking, SUV, and e-MTB bikes.
We are particularly interested in:
Yamaha PW-X3 – one of the most popular sports drives from Yamaha, used in many modern e-MTBs.
Yamaha PW-ST – a very popular unit used in trekking and utility bikes.
Yamaha PW-X2 – an earlier generation that is still found in a very large number of bikes currently in use.
Yamaha PWseries S2, PW-TE, and PW-CE – drives used in various segments of city and trekking bikes.
We are also analyzing various generations of Yamaha controls and displays, as the method of communication between individual system components is crucial for the possibility of creating software-based tuning.
Display C, Interface X, and newer Yamaha systems
Modern e-bike systems are becoming increasingly digital. The motor, battery, display, controller, and app are exchanging more and more data.
That is why, in the case of Yamaha, we are also interested in solutions such as Display C, Interface X, and newer controllers that work with smartphones.
It is precisely the development of digital communication that may, in the future, open the way to a completely new way of tuning Yamaha.
Instead of:
bike → disassembly → chip → installation
the future could look much simpler:
bike → connection → Speedchip → activation
This is the direction we want to develop.
Speedchip – from hardware to software
Our goal is to gradually expand Speedchip to further e-bike systems.
The experience gained with solutions for the Bosch Smart System and earlier Bosch generations shows that tuning does not have to mean only installing additional electronics in the bike.
Digital activation can be more user-friendly, easier to reverse, and does not require leaving an additional module near the motor.
Therefore, Yamaha is one of the most interesting next directions for our development.
Yamaha 32 km/h / 45 km/h?
This is, of course, one of the most frequently asked questions.
Our goal is to develop Speedchip solutions that allow changing the factory speed limit; however, at this stage, we are not yet publishing a final list of compatible motors or available speed variants.
Tests of individual systems must confirm which Yamaha configurations can be handled in a stable and reversible manner.
Only then will we present specific models, requirements, and capabilities.
What's next?
Yamaha is one of the next major Speedchip projects.
We are working on solutions for the next generations of drives and will publish information on progress in the TIPS section on Speedchip.store.
If you are using a bike with a Yamaha PW-X3, PW-ST, PW-X2, PWseries S2, or another Yamaha system, it is worth following our updates.
SPEEDCHIP – UNLOCK YOUR RIDE
Bosch is already here. More systems are coming.
The article presents the development direction and technologies being analyzed by Speedchip. It does not constitute an announcement of the availability of a specific product for all mentioned Yamaha systems. Final compatibility and features will be provided after testing is completed.
Changing the factory assistance limit may affect the legal classification of the vehicle and the ability to use it on public roads. Please check the regulations applicable in your country before use.
